To MARS with MER - RESEARCH/ers

Jessica Collisson
Integration and Test Team
NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers Project
NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

P2K: What do you really like about your job?

Jessica Collisson: I get to fly the spacecraft everyday...or drive the spacecraft or be the operator of the spacecraft in the lab. While everybody has their piece they're involved in testing, but when I come into the lab I'm manning the controls. And I think that's pretty exciting to be able to know how to operate the rover, and how to operate the spacecraft as whole system, and being the person in control of that.

P2K: Manning the controls. Do people still get told that engineering is not for women?

Jessica Collisson: No, I definitely don't think so...I think if you're confident... honestly I don't give much thought to it...you're right in there with everybody else. Nobody looks at us differently, at least I hope not...I don't experience that here and I think that's great and I really feel that we're a strong team, a group of people that are working together and it doesn't matter that I'm a female.
