Jay, in
answer to your question about how can I get involved in the Live
From Mars
project, I would say go to the web site using your skills on the
internet
and download or print the materials there and use them in your own
class.
Between the lessons to print and the materials to request, you
should have a
multitude of information to use. Thanks for participating, Steve

[586 ]
Willik
(Karen), You do not want a list of articles to be placed into the
shoebox.
You want to ask your students "Which articles do we need to take in
this
shoebox and use on the surface of the planet Mars?" Then decide how
these
materials might be used and whether or not they would be
financially
possible, and useful. Thanks for participating and I hope your class
has a
great time, Steve Kathy - Grand Junction, CO: . . . . Sat, Jul 20,

[587 ] Carol and I are back with tv and
computer both
in one room. When you are able please post where we can get the
teacher and
student materials that the live participants have. Also our video
seems to
have gotten messed up could we geta copy of this also. One more
question --
is logo being used with REd Rover, Red Rover? I know that it is used
to
control many lego dacta models and my kids are really into logo.

On behalf of the Entire teaching community attending the virtual
conference
here in Ireland today, we congratulate the nASA team who have put
this
Conference, particularly the Virtual section together. We have
several
student viewing the conference on NASA TV and are flying around the
web-site
- I wish you could see their faces. It is our intention here to promote
the

Well
Done!!! JenniferSellers: . . . . Sat, Jul 20, 12:43PM PDT (-0700 GMT). . .

kudos
along to the entire team! BillBourn: . . . . Sat, Jul 20, 12:44PM PDT (-

[590 ] I think the shoebox is closer to Earth than that,
Steve.
The students put together a shoebox and send one of themselves
somewhere to
run the observations. The class then tries to figure out where the
shoebox
went. At least that would be the most FUN approach! BillBourn: . . . .
Sat,
Jul 20, 12:47PM PDT (-0700 GMT). . .
[591 ] If your class is
internet-capable, they could list the contents of a shoebox to be
taken to a
site at some other, co-operative site in the world, in Ireland for
example.
Then they'd use the observations to find those locations and compare
them to
their own with the same box contents. LauraCO: . . . . Sat, Jul 20,

[592 ] The Pathfinder video that was shown
this
morning, was that the whole video or just a portion. If it was just a
portion of the video could you give the address of the location where
I can
purchase the video. Thanks BillBourn: . . . . Sat, Jul 20, 12:51PM PDT

This is
really cool. I'm ready to add Live From Mars to Red Rover, Red Rover.
Last
year we were a beta site for Red Rover, and this year I hope to really
get
connected. We were able to drive others' rovers, but they couldn't run
ours
since our IP address changed so much and the U of Utah disconnects
every 60
min. If I can help you, send email! Steve, auditorium: . . . . Sat, Jul 20,

technical discussions here, but could we also address the value,

to ask
the hard questions about it. I'm sure you've considered the
consequences or
lack thereof, however. : . . . . Sat, Jul 20, 12:57PM PDT (-0700 GMT). .

dropping in throughout the day and have had a brilliant time. I want
to
thank everyone who has got this amazing project going. Today is the
first
day of our Summer holiday, but when we get back in September I
would like to
get a group of students involved. Do you have suggestions for the
best place
for us to start? Don't forget we are 5 hours ahead of EST! We have
email and
web access at school, we haven't really made much use of it yet, but
I think
this could be a great start and would get students really exited.

[642 ] What steps have been taken to ensure that no life from here
(bacteria, spores, etc.) gets to Mars? BillBourn: . . . . Sat, Jul 20,
1:37PM PDT (-0700 GMT). . .
[643 ] A gyrocompass doesn't use the
magnetic
field of the planet to navigate. Instead it measures the changes in
orientation of the shell of the compass as it relates to the internal
spinning wheel. The science of it is that the wheel "wants" to remain
spinning the same axis and resists change. The resistance is
measure by the
instrument and you can tell where to point relative to the spinning.
