Video 5: Gas Giants

Images from the Pioneer, Voyager, and Galileo missions, along with explanations from NASA scientists, introduce the most important characteristics of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, which differentiate these gas planets from the terrestrial planets of our solar system.

  •  "Flying by the Gas Giants" presents the most important features of these gas planets: large size (compared with Earth), lack of solid surface, and internal sources of heat.

  •  "The Jupiter System" uses recent findings from the Galileo mission to explore in greater detail the four largest moons and their interactions with their parent planet.
  •  "Discovery Machines" looks forward to what we might see when the Cassini spacecraft arrives at Saturn in 2004, as well as evidence derived from Voyager and Hubble Space Telescope images.
