AMANDA
Close by "DASI" at the pole, another amazing "telescope" looks down, not up! It uses the entire earth to filter out everything except its celestial targets. This is "AMANDA" and it uses the clear, deep ice as its lens.
Nearly 700 photomultiplier tubes, each the size of a bowling ball, are lowered down into holes, much longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall.

In spring 2001 AMANDA detected high energy neutrinos from space, and proved this new kind of telescope worked!
