D e t r i c k B r a n s t o n Observer National Solar Observatory, Kitt Peak
WHAT'S FUN ABOUT THE JOB?
Actually many things about this job that are fun. First it's a change from the normal
day-to-day data archiving (down at the University.) It's quiet and peaceful early in the
morning being able to look out over Tucson or over the desert, it's pretty exciting. And
to see what's happening on the Sun first hand, and to see the sunlight come through the
telescope, and then to see the sunspots on the instruments... I think that's pretty
exciting.
WHAT TO DO WHEN SOME SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT SEEMS COMPLEX: "JUST ASK!"
It's kind of hard to get around the jargon, and there are still things today that I am
kind of missing, but to any student who's worried about the scientific words, I would
tell them that is really no way around it, but that if you have any questions about
something that an astronomer or your teacher might be talking about, the important thing
is to always ask questions. I've been told numerous times that there is no such thing as
a stupid question. Even if you think it might sound stupid, or if your friends might
think that you are stupid, just ask. That's the only way you are going to learn, by
actually asking and doing what you want in school, whatver subject it might be. So far as
the jargon goes, just ask questions, that's what I would say.
