Planning for Mars
6:30 to 8 p.m. Went to dinner with some of my colleagues. Two of them are here
from Germany for a week. Terry Kucera, another scientist I work with and whose biography
is on the LIVE FROM THE SUN website also joined us. We had Chinese food. We mainly
discussed how we want to operate the SUMER instrument on SOHO during the next 6 months.
What science problems we want to attack, which weeks we wanted to operate and which ones
we wanted to give the telemetry to EIT-another instrument on SOHO. We also discussed how
well we know the SOHO calibration. We get counts back from the instruments, but we want
to know how much energy the Sun puts out: to do this we need to calibrate the instruments.
This is a difficult task.
8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Reviewed some proposals that were sent to NASA to do various kinds
of research. I also spent some time writing this Journal! I also played some computer
games, but quit since I wasn't doing too well. I am tired, time to go to my apartment to
sleep.
