Responding to a question about people naming objects on Mars
People have been pretty good about just naming a few of them and not hogging the naming. But there is somebody named Nathan Bridges who is our naming czar and he makes sure that they don't use peoples' names and things like that. Most of the names have been cartoon characters or animals or things that the rocks are shaped like. It just makes it very easy to talk about the rocks and remember which ones they are when we're discussing what to do with the rover or where the rover ended up. If we named them X27B4 it would be very hard to remember what that one was and we'd have to refer to charts a lot more than we do now. It's mostly convenience and fun.
