Video 7: Rainforest Connections

In our kitchen cupboards and medicine cabinets most of us can readily find foods and other products originating in the rainforest. Your students will realize why rainforests are the source of so many pharmaceutically important substances. This video includes two segments:

"Forest Pharmacy," featuring ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin (also seen in the widely distributed IMAX movie, Amazon), identifies why both the rainforest and the wisdom of its indigenous people should be protected.

"Rainforest Education" shows that even youngsters living close to major rainforests may be ignorant of the forests' value and previews some of the hands-on activities your students may enjoy and learn from.

Using the video and associated activities your students will:

Understand how and why rainforest plants may offer medically beneficial pharmaceuticals.

Recognize that rainforest education can be useful in both rainforest and non-rainforest locations.

Practice taxonomic classification.
