"Teaching and Learning with Passport to Antarctica" (29:00)
and Opening Activities

1) Real Science: The P2K Way (00:41)
2) The Student Videos (13:10)
3) Hands-On Activities (25:08)
4) Online Resources (28:18)

Educator program B has 4 sections:

1) The P2K Model (00:41-13:09, r.t. 12:28)
This sequence uses scenes from previous PASSPORT TO KNOWLEDGE projects dealing with the rainforest and the solar system as well as Antarctica, including comments from teacher and student participants to show the unique power and educational potential of the integrated video, hands-on and online components. Science coordinator Sharon Spence from Kansas says P2K makes students feel involved with what's going on in the world. Examples from PASSPORT TO THE SOLAR SYSTEM show how P2K puts Hands-On Activities into highly-motivating real world context. 6th grade teacher Jo Lynn Roberts from Washington state says this puts P2K on the cutting edge. The PASSPORT TO THE RAINFOREST website is used as an example of how online resources can complement and extend the video and hands-on work. California educator Ginny Dexter notes that online discussion groups also work to help teachers share what works. At 09:34 the video presents a video checklist of what we hope you and your students will get from P2K Modules: an understanding of key concepts, interaction with working researchers, virtual visits to unique places, and practice in using real science procedures and the tools of the Information Age. Lastly, some ammunition to use with any Administrator who may think that using video and online may not provide genuine education: some statistics based on a 3-year evaluation of P2K projects supported by NSF. As you can see online we were able to document a 22% boost in work embodying the National Science Education Standards. As we hope you too will find, Bonnie Bracey (teacher representative on the National Information Infrastructure Task Force) says P2K projects have put stars in her eyes. 8th grade science teacher Tim McCollum from Illinois says P2K helps motivate both teachers and students by constantly showing them new horizons.

2) The Student Videos & Hands-On Activities (13:10-15:31, r.t. 02:20)
Section 2 provides brief introductions to the topics covered in video segments, and an example of how an Activity correlated with the content of the program will allow you to address key science standards.

3) Hands-On Activities demonstrations (Begins at 25:08)

  •  LIVE FROM ANTARCTICA 2 Teacher's Guide, page 29, Activity 1.4.2 Layers in the Water Column
  •  LIVE FROM ANTARCTICA 2 Teacher's Guide, page 40, Activity 2.3.1 Blubber Glove
