Zhaoqian Dong
Professor and former Director - Polar Research Institute of China, PRIC

Zhaoqian DongProfessor Dong was the first Chinese scientist sent to Antarctica by the Chinese government and one of the founders of the Chinese Antarctic infrastructure. He has been to Antarctica six times and has traveled once to the Arctic, either as a principle scientist, chief scientist, station leader, scientific team leader or expedition leader. He has been working on research in physical oceanography in the Southern Ocean since 1980.

He graduated in 1966 from the Department of Marine Physics, Ocean University of China and worked from 1996 to 1984 at the 2nd Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration, as a researcher on physical oceanography. From 1985 to 1988 he took the lead as founder in charge of the establishment of the Polar Research Institute of China. From 1989-2001 he became the Director of the Polar Research Institute of China and served as Honorary Director from 2001 to 2004.

Professor Dong has extensive experience in coordinating international science activities. From June 1992 to August 1996 he was Vice-president and a Member of the Executive Committee of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), which is part of ICSU, the International Council of Scientific Unions. From 1996 to 2001 he was the National Alternate Delegate to IASC (the International Arctic Science Committee.)

From May 1985 until today, he remains a Member of the Council, Shanghai Ocean Society. He is also a Member of the Council, Chinese Scientific Exploration Society and the China Ocean Environmental Society. Among his many other positions, he is a Member of the Scientific Committee, iAnzone (international Antarctic Zone Studies) program, SCOR (Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research), and the SCAR ad hoc Group on SCAR Organization and Strategy (Cambridge, UK.) He is Chief-Editor of Journals: Antarctic Research (in Chinese with English abstracts) and Chinese Polar Science (in English.)
