Li Cheng-SenProfessor Cheng-Sen Li's research interests include the history of plants and flowers and the floristic relationship between eastern North America and eastern Asia, the collection and study of fossil plants, and comparative studies of evolution of plant diversity and global climate. Professor Li has studied, taught and done research internationally including Wales, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, the United States, Poland, France, India, the Ukraine, and Russia. From 2004-2008 he was Director of the Beijing Museum of Natural History. Dr. Li was a member of the 2006-2007 Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition, and from July 1 to 21, 2008, was also part of the 2008 Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition.

Dr. Li studied geosciences at the Department of Geology, Peking University in 1973 and obtained his BA degree in 1977. He studied biological sciences at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1978 to 1986 where he earned both his MSc & PhD degrees. He held a post-doctorate and research associate post at the Institute of Palaeontology, University of Bonn and Senckenberg Institute, Frankfurt, Germany from 1987 to 1989. Since 1990 Dr has been a professor in the Institute of Botany, CAS, and has served as Director of Palaeobotany, Director of National Museum of Plant History and Deputy Director of the Institute of Botany, CAS (until 1998.)

Professor Li is the president of the Palaeobotanical Association, Botanical Society of China, fellow of Linnean Society, UK, honorary member of Palaeobotanical Section, Botanical Society of America, and member of many prestigious professional societies such as the Botanical Society of America, International Association of Wood Anatomists, the Botanical Society of China, the Paleontological Society of China and the Geological Society of China.
