** Exploring Space and Cyberspace **

Passport to Knowledge is sponsoring two electronic field trips for the 1995-96 school year. We are in the last and critically important phase of the Live from the Stratosphere--reflection, analysis and integration. We are also looking forward to using what we are learning from this process to prepare for Live from the Hubble Telescope in the Spring. This newsletter is organized around resources from:

                       ___
                        |ELEVISION,
                          ___
                           |ELECOMPUTING, &
                             ___
                              |EACHERS

which together create a field trip to the frontiers of science. In this newsletter, there will be two parts to each section. The <> part will focus on preparation for the next adventure in space

"Live from the the Hubble Space Telescope."

The [[second]] part focuses on the on going activities in the final phase of

"Live from the Stratosphere."

Program 1: "The Great Planet Debate"
Thursday, November 9th 10:30-11:00am
Eastern on PBS satellite:
Testar 401, Transponder 8

The program will describe the unique opportunity facing teachers
and students over the next two months: to decide how to allocate three
orbits of the Hubble committed by SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE
INSTITUTE (STScI) to Passport to Knowledge (see pages 59 & 60 of the
Live from the Stratosphere Teacher's Guide for more information.)

By December 15th, 1995, The Passport to Knowledge team-- including each of
you-- must reach consensus about which planet to observe and give this
information to the STScI staff. Following the program there will be online
discussions, plans, proposals and decisions as we all work together to
reach
consensus on:

WHICH PLANET THE HUBBLE SHOULD OBSERVE...

         . ___---___ .

After the decision is made in December, the STScI staff will work
throughout January and February to design the experiment. Two live
"electronic field trips" will then climax the year, welcoming students
into some of the most cutting-edge science of the 20th century.

As with all Passport to Knowledge projects, the live, interactive video will
be supported by extensive online materials, and print resources suggesting
hands-on discovery activities. Extended educational rights of one year
after original broadcast apply.

<<<<< The Future begins... "Live from the Hubble Telescope" >>>>>

Teachers can help student to think about the future as they reflect on what has been accomplished.

"HANDS-ON THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE"

You and your students can be part of the discussion that determines which of four planets will be the focus of the Hubble Telescope. Science involves using information to make decisions and we want you and your students to be part of the decision-making process.

As in most decisions, there are advocates for different possible outcomes. There are four possible planets that could be viewed given the time and place constraints of the Hubble telescope. There are:

        JUPITER
        NEPTUNE
        PLUTO
        URANUS

On the televised program, The Planet Debate, you will find out who will be "PLANET ADVOCATES" and "PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS," to work with your students online to develop research plans to view a particular planet.

Heidi Hammel, from MIT, who will be our Planet Advocate for Neptune shares her thoughts on student involvement in the decisions:

I think a project like this is a great way for
students to see how scientists make decisions...
how scientists really work on a day-to-day basis...
When the students are looking at the various options
they have, whether it's Neptune, Pluto, Jupiter or
Uranus, they are going to be asking 'What is the
most interesting thing I can do?' And that is what
science is all about, that's what scientists do all
the time. They think, I want to study this, what's
the best way to do that, what's the right way to do the
observation, how can I best use my observing time to
answer a question. That's what science is all about,
and that's what this project is going to allow
     students to do.

You students will be co-investigators developing plans to influence the decision. Then together as a team we will evaluate the different plans and come to consensus about which planet to view and more importantly why. This is an important part of doing real science. PLEASE JOIN US!

NOW IS THE TIME TO HELP YOUR STUDENT REFLECT ON WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED

The Teacher's Guide has a number of suggestions and teachers discuss-lfs have been sharing many ideas for how to help students organize what they have learned. From research on past projects, the teachers that were most enthusiastic about student gains almost all involved their students in teaching others. In some cases, it was the parents, in other cases it was another grade of students who had not been a part of the adventure.

We are asking you and your students to complete the evaluation forms for this project. We will need *everyone* to help with evlaution. Even if you did not use the program with students, we want to know how you participated and your evalution of the resources.

PLEASE, when you have finished your work on Live from the Stratosphere, complete the evaluation forms for teacher and students and send them to:

If you cannot find your evaluation forms, don't worry. We will send them online later this week. We would like to have everyone fill them out. If there are questions that are not appropriate to your situation, just leave them blank or explain your situation.

We need to know who has followed this project and what impact it has had on learning. We are interested in learners of all ages. So please, when you see the evaluation form, next week, complete it and return it plus any other comments or suggestions you might have to help us evaluate this project to:
