QUESTIONS: How do you keep from being hit by the jetstreams at high altitudes? ANSWER from Bill Hoss on June 13: Jet Streams are unavoidable in our line of business. But before going on, let's review some facts about the Jet Streams. First of all Jet Streams are not always dangerous. Actually, Jet Streams are rarely dangerous. Nowadays, forecasters can usually predict the most dangerous part of a Jet Stream, turbulence. However, if severe turbulence from the Jet Stream is encountered data can not normally be collected until smooth conditions return. This sometimes requires the KAO to change altitude or location to find smooth air. Jet Streams are like rivers of air traveling at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour. Jet Streams are responsible for the changes in our weather. They move huge volumes of clouds across our land. The clouds bring us rain, snow, temperature changes etc. The limits of the stream are usually quite defined and this causes rough air boundaries. Once the airplane has penetrated the Jet Stream's boundary, the airplane "goes with the flow." If the airplane is flying against the wind it can make the trip a lot longer.
