QUESTION: What kind of food do you eat while flying on the KAO? ANSWER from Juan Rivera and Dave Black on May 11: This how a telescope operator named Juan Rivera described his lunch: I've got my lunch spread across my tiny desk. That day it was orange juice, carrots and a sandwich behind the keyboard; the potato chips to the side of the keyboard. Once Juan got to Hawaii, this is what he wrote: One of the neat things about flying out of Hickam Air Force Base is that we can order these really nifty flight meals from the Air Force for $2.15. It's the greatest deal on earth. It comes in a cardboard box that says, "Hickam Air Force Base Flight Kitchen - Crossroads of the Pacific - Hale Aina Mokulele" Here's what I get for my $2.15: 1 can of pineapple nector 1 tin of jello 1 bag of peanuts 1 chocolate-covered dry-roasted macadamia nut candy bar 1 bag of potato chips (About to explode !!) 1 piece of Sara Lee pound cake 1 Apple 1 Ham sandwich 1 Chicken leg and 1 breast Dave wrote the following: I usually bring a sandwich and some cookies, and plenty to drink. When we're on deployment (right now we're in Hawaii), meals are sometimes provided. Here in Hawaii, the Air Force sells us box lunches that they usually provide to their own flight crews. They include a sandwich, some chips, an apple or an orange, and something to drink. I usually eat early because the low humidity dries out bread so quickly; it becomes impossible to eat! I also put my container of water or soda on the floor for awhile, because the floor gets very cold. If you leave the container there long enough, the cold floor will freeze it solid. We also carry coffee and hot water on board, and some instant soup, in case someone forgets to bring their own food. So basically, we are on your own, as far as food goes! We can't carry on glass containers (they might break). Often a sealed container (like a bag of chips) will explode in your backpack due to the altitude But other than, we are free to bring whatever we can carry.
