Why is it so cold in outer space?

ANSWER from Sue Madden on May 9:
In outer space there is no air. If you were in outer space, the
side of you facing the sun would get very hot while the other side
would get very cold.  And the farther you go from the sun the colder
you would get. Here on the earth, we are lucky to have air
around us to regulate the temperature.
