QUESTION: How are the pilots chosen? ANSWER from Bill Hoss on May 16: The crewmembers of the KAO are selected from hundreds of qualified applicants. Currently KAO crewmembers all have over 20 years of flying experience. Most have over 5,000 flying hours in military C141 aircraft. In addition to C141 experience, applicants must have flying time in C130 and DC8 aircraft. In other words, NASA crewmembers are highly experienced in a variety of jets. After qualifying each applicant must complete an extensive subjective appraisal by NASA crew management. Only the best applicants are selected.
