QUESTION: How many people are involved in KAO throughout the year? ANSWER from Steve Patterson, KAO Mission Director on October 27, 1995: Well, we have about 50 people directly assigned to the KAO, of whom about 15 actually fly aboard the plane at various times (not including the pilots, who we share with all the other aircraft at NASA-Ames). We also utilize lots of other people at Ames to support the project, such as design engineers and machinists. These people work on numerous other programs besides ours, but we really could not accomplish our mission without their support. The astronomer teams vary in size, from a minimum of 2 people, to as many as 7-8 for some projects. We flew around 20 different Principal Investigator (PI) groups this past year. We also had FOSTER teachers aboard the majority of the flights we made this past year, and on most of the flights we made, all the seats were filled (21 warm bodies aboard).
