QUESTION: Yesterday I saw in the newspaper that a new planet was discovered near Pluto. Will you look at it with the KAO? ANSWER from Scott Sanford on November 9, 1995: Sorry, but I haven't heard anything about a new planet discovered near Pluto. I asked around and so far I haven't found anybody else here who's heard anything either. Perhaps what you heard about was the potential new planets that have recently been discovered around other stars? One thing I CAN tell you is that whatever new object the newspaper was talking about, we will not be able to use the KAO to look at it. The KAO was recently retired and will no longer be used for astronomical studies. We hope to have its replacement, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) flying within the next 5 years or so.
