QUESTION: What inspired you to be a part of the KAO team? ANSWER from Allen Meyer on Oct.14,1995: Didn't happen by inspiration. My background is in astronomy, but my first real full-time job after finishing college was doing a variety of science data analysis here at Ames. In 1976, I was writing computer programs to process infrared data (Venus, stars), when I heard about an opening in the new KAO project. I applied and was hired as a member of the flight crew. As I recall, I went on my first flight my second day at work. The KAO had been flying for about two years, but there had not been anyone on the staff with an astronomy education. I started with basically nothing, and put together the bare essentials of an astronomy reference library, and collected what little information existed about infrared sources in the sky. Throughout all of these past 19 years, there have been many opportunities to contribute to the success of the KAO program. It's been very rewarding to be a part of so much progress in learning about what's happening in the universe.
