QUESTION: How long until another comet hits Jupiter and would you be able to see it from the KAO? ANSWER from Bob Loewenstein on October 16, 1995 We don't know the frequency of impacts by large bodies onto Jupiter. This is because we had never seen an impact on anything (other than the earth) before. Some people thought that it happens often, and predicted we would not see anything extraordinary on Jupiter due to the impact. But as we all know, we DID see immediate effects. So, the fact that we did see something means that if this happens frequently, we would have seen the effects of other impacts. But we haven't, so we must conclude that this was not just a once-in-a-lifetime event...probably once-in-a-1000-years or so, we can't really say. You also ask if we would be able to see it from the KAO...well, the answer is no because the KAO's last flight was last Friday night. But if it did continue to fly, we would be able to observe any future impacts as we did Shoemaker-Levy. We just have to know about the impact ahead of time so we can make plans to observe Jupiter at the correct time.
