this spacecraft called MGS...all the time it’s orbiting around Mars, it’s

ON SEPTEMBER 11, AFTER A TEN MONTH JOURNEY, GLOBAL SURVEYOR 
WAS CAPTURED INTO ORBIT AROUND MARS. 

ON SEPTEMBER 15TH, DURING ITS THIRD CLOSE APPROACH TO MARS, 
GLOBAL SURVEYOR COULD SAFELY POINT ALL ITS SCIENCE 
INSTRUMENTS TOWARD THE PLANET FOR THE FIRST TIME. 

THE MARS ORBITER LASER ALTIMETER...MOLA WAS TURNED ON FOR A 
TEST OF THE SYSTEM BEFORE IT BEGINS ITS SYSTEMATIC MAPPING 
MISSION LATER IN 1998.

THIS IS A VISUALIZATION OF DATA COLLECTED BY MOLA. 

THE RED LINE SHOWS AN APPROXIMATELY 3000 MILE TRACK OF THE 
PLANET’S NORTHERN HEMISPHERE PROBED BY THE LASER ALTIMETER.

THE BULGE IS IN A REGION CALLED THE ELYSIUM RISE, THE SECOND 
LARGEST VOLCANIC AREA ON MARS.

THIS TOPOGRAPHIC PROFILE REPRESENTS MOLA DATA COLLECTED 
OVER A 20 MINUTE TIME FRAME, THIS BULGE IS AT LEAST 3 MILES HIGH, 
BUT THE AREA ALSO HAS DEEP CHASMS... EVIDENCE, PERHAPS, OF 
TECTONIC AND VOLCANIC PROCESSES AS WELL AS EROSION...THE

MOLA’S INFRARED PULSES FIRE TEN TIMES EACH SECOND. HOW LONG 
IT TAKES FOR THE LIGHT TO REFLECT OFF THE MARTIAN SURFACE AND 
RETURN TO THE ORBITER -- COMBINED WITH CALCULATIONS OF THE 
SPACECRAFT'S DISTANCE RELATIVE TO THE CENTER OF THE PLANET -- 
YIELDS SURFACE ELEVATIONS THAT ARE PRECISE TO WITHIN TENS OF 
METERS.

STUDENTS CAREFULLY RECORDED >THEIR< MEASUREMENTS IN 
LOGBOOKS. THE NUMBERS WERE THEN TRANSFORMED INTO A SET OF 
PHYSICAL PROFILES...RESULTING IN  A 3 DIMENSIONAL TOPOGRAPHIC 
RELIEF REPRESENTING THE PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN TERRAIN.

WITH THE HANDS-ON PART OF THE SIMULATION COMPLETE, MR.

AND THEN USED AN EASILY ACCESSIBLE SOFTWARE PROGRAM, NIH 
IMAGE, TO TRANSFORM THE NUMERICAL DATA INTO VISUAL DISPLAYS.

SO IN THIS ONE ACTIVITY STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT THE 
TOPOGRAPHY OF MARS AND THE INSTRUMENTS ABOARD A NASA 
SPACECRAFT… THEY CONDUCTED AN INVESTIGATION USING 
SCIENTIFIC PROCEDURES AND COMPUTER SKILLS, AND THEN – 
SYMBOLIZING SOME OF THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY LIVE 
FROM MARS IN COOPERATION WITH NASA – THEY HAD AN 
OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT DIRECTLY WITH GLENN CUNNINGHAM, 
PROJECT MANAGER OF MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR MISSION.

THEN IT WAS TIME TO GATHER DATA, TO SEE HOW WELL THE

IN AN EXCITING FIRST, A DESCENT IMAGING CAMERA CHARACTERIZES 
THE SURFACE WHERE IT LANDS. 

TOUCHDOWN SHOULD BE ABOUT 500 MILES FROM MARS' SOUTH POLE, 
THE HIGHEST LATITUDE LANDING YET ON THE PLANET.

THE SURVEYOR LANDER HAS A ROBOTIC ARM, DESIGNED TO DIG DOWN 
INTO WHAT'S CALLED "LAYERED TERRAIN"… AN AREA WHICH 
SCIENTISTS THINK HAS BEEN CREATED BY SUCCESSIVE MELTING AND 
FREEZING OF THE MARTIAN POLAR CAP… TRAPPING GENERATIONS OF 
DUST WHICH MIGHT CONTAIN CLUES TO MARS' CLIMATE HISTORY.

THE SOIL GETS ANALYZED BY AN ONBOARD LABORATORY…

JUST AS ON PATHFINDER, THERE'S A CAMERA SYSTEM TO IMAGE THE 
LANDING SITE, WITH FILTERS TO REVEAL THE PRESENCE OF DIFFERENT 
KINDS OF ROCKS…

IF THE CAMERA LOOKS RATHER LIKE PATHFINDER'S "IMP" – THERE'S A 
VERY GOOD REASON. 

JUST LIKE THE IMP, THE CAMERA WAS BUILT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF 
ARIZONA, TUCSON. 

"LIVE FROM MARS" VISITED A BASEMENT CLEAN ROOM, WHERE A TEAM 
WORKING WITH PETE SMITH WAS PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON 
THE CAMERA…

ACROSS THE ROOM, OTHER RESEARCHERS WERE WORKING ON THE 
SPECIAL "WRIST" CAMERA WHICH WILL BE ATTACHED TO SURVEYOR'S 
ROBOT ARM, ALLOWING SCIENTISTS TO SEE EXACTLY WHAT'S SHE'S 
GATHERING, FROM WHERE…

IF ALL GOES WELL, THE SURVEYOR 98 LANDER AND ORBITER WILL 
SURVIVE TO RETURN YEAR'S OF DATA… LEADING ON TO THE SAMPLE 
RETURN MISSIONS IN THE FIRST DECADE OF THE 21ST CENTURY.

THESE WILL LIKELY USE LONG-RANGE ROVERS WHICH WILL ROAM 
MILES FROM THE LANDERS, COLLECTING ROCKS AND RETURNING 
THEM TO BASE… WAITING FOR THE FIRST TICKET HOME TO EARTH.

ALREADY TESTS OF THIS ROVER, KNOWN AS "NOMAD", HAVE LOGGED 
MORE THAN 133 MILES ACROSS CHILE'S RUGGED ATACAMA DESERT…

BUT IN THE SECOND DECADE OF THE NEW MILLENIUM, THE HOPE IS TO 
LAUNCH THE FIRST >HUMAN< MISSIONS TO MARS… 

AND IF HUMANS GO, WE'LL NEED NEW KINDS OF SPACESUITS TO 
PROTECT THEM ON THE ROCKY MARTIAN SURFACE, AND ALLOW THEM 
TO DO WHAT GEOLOGISTS LOVE TO DO… REACH DOWN AND GATHER 
ROCKS.

ALREADY RESEARCHERS AT NASA'S JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, HOME 
OF THE SHUTTLE ASTRONAUTS, ARE DEVELOPING SUITS TO MEET
