Activity 1.3: STUDENT WORKSHEET

Following teacher directions, assemble a stream table using the wallpaper tray as illustrated below.
  1. Tilt your tray to the angle assigned by the teacher. DO NOT CHANGE ANGLE.
  2. Make sure your stream table will not move or slip.
  3. Carefully pour some sand into your tray and smooth it out to a uniform depth of about 1/2 an inch.
  4. Use an index finger to create a small groove in the sand at the top, middle of the tray about an inch long.
  5. Measure four cups of water into water jug and pour carefully through 1/4 in. funnel, allowing the water to run down the tray into this groove.
  6. Complete appropriate measurements and sketch the flow pattern which results, carefully noting such things as:
    • the shape of the flow pattern including whether the channel cut by the water was straight or curved
    • how wide the channel became
    • how deep the channel became
    • whether a small or large amount of sand was carried down stream by the water
    • whether or not avalanching occurred, and
    • whether or not a delta was formed
