Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:16AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [33 ]
impulse: On Pathfinder, I help the scientist to build commands which take the pictures you see on the news. I used to work on developing the software that is used to do this; now I maintain that software and train others to use it.

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:17AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [34 ]
Sandy: I've forgotten how to use the scroll back!

Ashley: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:17AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [35 ]
How much did it cost to send a "rover"to mars?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:17AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [39 ]
David: I hope they will send astronauts to Mars in my lifetime. I'd sure like to be one of them!

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:18AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [40 ]
Ashley: The rover cost about $25 million, I think.

Ms.Collins/SierraVistaM.S: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:19AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [41 ]
Is there a certain role model which made you decide what you are today?

caldwell: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:19AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [42 ]
caldwell..HOW MUCH LOGER DO I HAVE TO WAIT??!!???

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:19AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [43 ]
Joshua: I think you need more specific: software, hardware, team structure?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:20AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [44 ]
Impulse: Yes, I read a LOT of SF as a kid! Some of my favorite authors were Heinlein and Hogan and MacCaffrey (more fantasy)

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:21AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [45 ]
Caldwell: Pathfinder was started as a project 3 years before launch. That was "Faster" part of "faster, better, cheaper".

Ms.Collins/SierraVistaM.S: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [48 ]
How big is the Mars Pathfinder?

: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [49 ]
Bridget..How about comic books? If so, do you like Impulse?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [50 ]
Rico: It's complicated; it takes a lot more energy to go in a straight line than to "loop" out there. Also, since we're moving and Mars is moving, we have to "lead" the target, the way you would if you were shooting.

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:24AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [51 ]
Ms. Collins: No specific role models, though I had a female science teacher who was very inspirational.

Ashley : . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:24AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [52 ]

Where did you go to college/ university?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:25AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [57 ]
David: How long it takes to get to Mars depends on when you start! Since both Mars and the Earth are orbiting the Sun, they get closer and farther away. We took just about the shortest route, and it took 7 months. It only took light 10 minutes, when we were at closest approach.

Ashley : . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:26AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [58 ]

Is it hard to take pictures on Mars?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:29AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [74 ]
Rena: I LOVE my job! This is what I've wanted to do since I was a little girl. The only sad thing is that the mission is so short!

: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:30AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [75 ]
HOW DOU LICK YOUR JOB

Ms.Collins/SierraVistaM.S: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:30AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [76 ]

Did you do any experiments to help the rover

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:32AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [84 ]
Rena: We were hoping that we would be working with the spacecraft for about an Earth year, but we haven't heard from the spacecraft since Friday. We're a little concerned, but we think that the battery has just finally died, leaving us with only solar power. That will change how we have to do things, at least a little bit.

david: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:33AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [85 ]
Do you think there used to be life on Mars?

Kyle: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:33AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [86 ]

Rena: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:35AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [91 ]
How long does it take to get to Mars.

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:35AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [92 ]
Kyle: The atmosphere on Mars is very thin, which means it can't hold a lot of heat, so the temperature changes very fast when the sun comes up or goes down.

Rena: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:35AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [93 ]
how long before you send a rover to a different planet?

Rena: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:36AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [94 ]

Have you found any very large or small craters from astroids?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:38AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [102 ]
Moonrocks: It's not all that hard to take pictures on Mars, at least once you get the camera there! The atmosphere is very thin, and so are the few clouds we have detected, so you can usually predict the light levels and pick the right filter to use to get the image you want.

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:39AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [103 ]
Ms. Collins: I didn't take a class from Ali Cambel; what department was he in and what did he teach?

I really don't know... but we thought it was interesting that you went to Caltech!

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:41AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [106 ]
Ashley: The rover has an instrument which can tell us what the rocks are made of, which the lander doesn't have; also, you can tell a lot about a rock by a good close look and Sojourner can give us a very close look at MANY rocks.

Ms.Collins/SierraVistaM.S: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:41AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [107 ]
What is your favorite animal?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:42AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [108 ]
Star Wars: Pathfinder uses a battery which is re-charged from the solar panels, but it can run at a lower level on the solar panels alone.

: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:42AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [109 ]
How did you know you wanted to do what you do, instead of doing something else with computers or something else with space exploration? Did you ever want to be an astronaut instead?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:42AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [111 ]
Ashely: I have helped take pictures of the rover, to make sure that it got where they thought it did. I've also done some of the rover movies, my mine don't come out as well as Justin's.

Patterson/MNHHS: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:43AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [112 ]
How do you deal with the time delay concerning what you see and what is happening on the surface of mars?

How do you control the Pathfinder from Earth?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:43AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [114 ]
David: I really hope there was life on Mars at some point. Not sure about now. But as they said in "Contact" "If we're alone out here, it's an awful waste of space!"

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:44AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [115 ]
IMPULSE: In regards to your question about what other kinds of engineers work at NASA, go to the Live From Mars Team page at button and click on "The Team" icon for a listing of jobs and bios and journals.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM?

Ms.Collins/SierraVistaM.S: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:45AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [122 ]
How hot is the average temperature on Mars?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:46AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [123 ]
Kyle: The rover was going where we couldn't help it if it got into trouble, so we had to make it pretty smart, so it could take care of itself. Also,no one had ever built one before, and you know that the first one is ALWAYS more expensive.

Ashley: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:47AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [124 ]
Does mars have a strong or weak magnetic field?

Impulse: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:47AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [125 ]
Bridget... What is your favorite Heinlein book? I started my daughter on Podkayne of Mars (Impulse's Dad)

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:47AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [126 ]
Patterson: We landed where a huge flood happened millions o years ago. We were looking for a place that would have a large variety of different kinds of rocks, and felt that rocks from many different terrains would be gathered in the outflow of such a huge flood. We were right!

Ms.Collins/SierraVistaM.S: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:48AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [127 ]
have you ever been to space

Ashley: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:48AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [128 ]
What things went wrong with the "rover" when sent to mars?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:48AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [129 ]
Ashley: No life yet, but Pathfinder could only find life if it was big enough to take a picture of, as we are there mostly to look at rocks, to determine Mars' history.

rico: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:48AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [130 ]
Why was Sojourner designed to be so small??

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:48AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [131 ]
Impulse: I always wanted to be a scientist, but once I saw the moon landing, I knew I wanted to be involved in the space program.

Impulse: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:49AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [132 ]
What kind of energy do you use to launch rockets (question from Sara)

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:49AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [133 ]
Mrs. Mower: I *AM* on a space mission! But I know what you mean; I hope to try out for the next class of astronaut candidates. They interveiw for them every year or so.

Ashley: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:50AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [134 ]
Why did you name it "rover" and the changed it to the mans name who predicted there would be a "rover" on mars?

Ms.Collins/SierraVistaM.S: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:50AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [135 ]
Is there life on mars.

Star Wars: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:51AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [136 ]
Have you ben on the Star Wars Web Site? button

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:51AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [137 ]
Patterson: We have to predict the future! Seriously, that is why we had to make the rover so smart. We give it commands based on what we've seen in the pictures, but it has to be smart enough to stop if it's getting into trouble.

RENA: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:51AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [138 ]
Do you like The Pathfinder

Mrs. Mower: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:51AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [139 ]

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:51AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [141 ]
Star Wars: We put together a set of commands for a whole day called a sequence, which is sent to the spacecraft in it's morning, telling it what to do that day.

Ashley: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:51AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [142 ]
Bridget, we forgot to mention steven (me)

Mrs. Mower: I'm currently working part time on a potential mission to one of Jupiter's moons, Europa. The mission would send a spacecraft to melt through the ice sheet and release a submarine into the ocean we think is underneath.

How well have the autonimous capabilities of the Pathfinder been working? Have you found that you have had to do any extensive changes to the origional programming of the Pathfinder?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:55AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [155 ]
Vittoz: The autonomous programing on the rover has worked quite well, even better than it did during our tests. I don't think they've had to do much more than tweak it since we landed.

Brandon: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:55AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [156 ]

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:56AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [159 ]
Rico: It's VERY expensive to take things to Mars, so the smaller we could make Sojourner, the better.

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:57AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [169 ]
Star WArs: I think the most interesting thing about Mars is that it is so much like, yet unlike Earth. I think we could learn a lot about how life developes, whether life ever existed there or not. One answer would tell us one thing, the other somthing else

Ashley: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:58AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [170 ]

What happens to Pathfinder when its mission is over?

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 10:59AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [178 ]
Luke: We need to have a full environment to exist on Mars, almost the same as we would for the moon. We would need to build the equivalent of a space station (minus the thrusters and such) as well as green houses.

Bridget/JPL: . . . . Tue, Sep 30, 11:00AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [184 ]
Faith: I love chemistry, particularly physical chemistry, which is the study of how things change from one form to another (solid-liquid-gas, different crystal phases). Also, nuclear chemistry is a blast.
