Hi Sarah. PSC, I am a homeschooler/ Alternative Education Provider,
and about 2 days after I got online, I volunteered through the URL
above, my bio is at: http://passporttoknowledge.com/hst/smart.html#gr and
my personal page is at
http://www.wwdc.com/womblegarten/gayle.htm and my Website is
at: http://www.wwdc.com/womblegarten.

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:17AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
When is the eclipse?

Pacific Space Centre, Vancouver, Canada: . . . . Thu, Sep 19,
12:17AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Is there anything specific that someone wants to talk about?

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:18AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Sarah, my son is to, looking forward to participating that is, how do
you like teaching gifted and talented

mask: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:19AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Has anyone read the "In Focus" article (page 20) in the October issue
of "Scientific American?" It is quite skeptical about the evidence in the
meteorite.

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:19AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I love teaching these kids. They are fabulous. Is anyone else online?

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:19AM PDT (-0800
GMT)
PSC, I'm glad to have the chance to chat with you. I've been looking
forward to it. The numbers are growing, I have an appointment with
the London Public Board of Ed, to show them the stuff next week and
I've been going to all the Homeschooling Conferences and
Workshops letting people know it's out there, I've also introduced it
to a Private school here.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:19AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hello, I have to read what's been written already first

Pacific Space Centre, Vancouver, Canada: . . . . Thu, Sep 19,
12:20AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Gayle, that's great! We currently have two school districts that are
throwing themselves (and all their schools) into the program. It's very
exciting! I'm giving several workshops in October.

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:21AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Is there an easy way to get/receive messages without clicking on the
chat button? In otherwords, is it possible to automatically see all of the
chatter?

Pacific Space Centre, Vancouver, Canada: . . . . Thu, Sep 19,
12:22AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Not that I know of...but it would be nice!

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:22AM PDT (-0800
GMT)
Hi, Six261, nice to see you here. I just had the joy of presenting the
PTK stuff at a HS'ing Workshop done by Gregg Harris, he was very
impressed with it. What programs have you been involved in?

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:23AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
How many folks online are going to participate in LFM?

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:23AM PDT (-0800
GMT)
Hi Marc, Glad to see? you!!!

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:23AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Early on someone asked about the TEacher's Guides. They are still in
process. But a table of contents should be published on Monday.
Look on then on the Web (under Teachers' Lounge, resources) and
it'll also be distributed via an LFM #3 update.

Pacific Space Centre, Vancouver, Canada: . . . . Thu, Sep 19,
12:24AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
When can we expect the LFM #3 update?

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:25AM PDT (-0800
GMT)
Sarah, my kids are only K-2 so I adjust the programs and we do
whatever we can last spring we participated in the Weather Watcher
Program, they loved it. This year I'll be Smart Filtering for LFM and
anything else I can work in.

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:25AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Does anyone have any additional activities that would be good for 5/6
graders as a prep for LFM? This is my first time participating.

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:26AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
This is our 1st projest like this Gayle. By the way I grew up in
Woodstock Ont. so you're in my home turf

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:26AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Sarah, You asked about automatically seeing teh messages without
pressing the Chat button. We have software on qquest to do that, but
currently the software allows people to post pictures. We don't want
that capability available, so once the code gets edited, the pressing
won't be necessary. And in October, when we go to student-NASA
expert chats, those will be moderated and we'll use the new (no extra
pressing buttons) software

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:26AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Gayle, What is Smart Filtering?

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:27AM PDT (-0800
GMT)
Marc - could you tell me about the CD-rom that was demonstrated at
the conference in Washington. I've ordered it as they said it was free
for Teachers but I wondered If you could let me know a little more
detail about it? Please.

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:28AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I'd be interested in prp for 5/6 grade level also if anyone has some
suggestions

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:28AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Is that Kathy from Pacific Space Centre? The LFM#3 will be out
Monday or Tuesday. Probably Tuesday. I've been on travel all this
week (still am), so I expect Moday will be a bit crazy for me.

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:28AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc, Thanks! I'm trying to get the hang of this before the "gang"
comes online. They are in ART right now. :)

greg: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:28AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
What is LFM? What grade levels etc.

Pacific Space Centre, Vancouver, Canada: . . . . Thu, Sep 19,
12:29AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thanks, Marc. I have a large workshop coming up on Oct. 18 and
would like to be able to show them at least part of the teacher's guide
and what it will include. We have a ton of interest up here!

kainoosh: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:29AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I am a seventh grader and am wondering if the moon has any animals
on it?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:29AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Who was it that said Scientific American said the Mars meteorite
evidence was being refuted? Please say more about that. Why did the
article's author think it was eveidence of life?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:31AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
By Oct 18, the full text of the Teachr's Guide should be available
online, and if you ordered a physical copy, you should already have it
in hand. I think the planned ship date is now Oct 6 or so.

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:31AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Oops...yes, Marc, it is Kathy at the Pacific Space Centre...I forgot I
didn't have my name up - I'll change that right now!

Dave (VT): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:33AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Anyone doing eclipse observation next Thursday on the East Coast?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:33AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
gayle, THe CD demoed in Washington was great. Only problem was
that there were isgnificant scientific errors and also I've caught some
wind of a problem with copyrights. JPl promised to start shipping
again in October. There was also another CD (Mac only I think) that
CEMEX gave out one evening.

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:33AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
In terms of long range planning...when should I expect to be actively
teaching the LFM on a daily basis? When will the busiest time occur?
How do others manage the program in the classroom?

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:34AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Is there any way to order the teacher guides online, or just by mailing
a cheque to PTK in Summit, NJ?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:34AM PDT (-0800 GMT)

A Smart Filter is someone who helps the students questions get to the
right people and then sees to it that the right answers get back to the
kids check out: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/helpers-form-intro.pl

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:35AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Can one of the advocates answer the Q about what is LFM? I've got to
step away for a moment

mask: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:35AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Re "Scientific American": "...at that scale...minerals can grow into
shapes that are virtually impossible to distinguish from nanofossils."

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:35AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Does anyone know if the eclipse is visable in Michigan, and a time
frame for it??

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:36AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Gayle, the other CD Rom was called the Mars Viking 20th
Anniversary CD Rom and it is quite good too (not as interactive). It is
available by calling 415-604-4217 or by mailing a request to Dr.
Geoffry Briggs @ NASA Ames Research Centre, MS 245-1, Moffet
Field, CA 94035. Hope that helps!

kainoosh: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:37AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
when is the eclipse and in what parts of the US will it be visable

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:37AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
What time is the eclipse? I'm just outside of

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:38AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
For whoever (I lost your name!) asked what Live From Mars (LFM)
is, take a look at the website http://passporttoknowledge.com/lfm/

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:38AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Dave, There was some talk on discuss-lfm about folks doing the
Star Census from past LHST (http://passporttoknowledge.com/hst) project.
They said they'd count stars before and during and after the eclipse.
Sounds like a great idea to me. When exactly is the eclipse and what is
happening?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:40AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
mask: but I thought what was so compelling about the Mars evidence
was that there were all sorts of organic compunds in very close
proximity to one another in the rock. And not elsewhere in the rock.
So unless there was a major coinky-dink, it seems very likley that the
stuff came from some life

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:40AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Regarding the lunar eclipse on the 26th. When you will see it depends
on your location.

Dave (VT): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:42AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
kainoosh -full lunar eclipse on Thurs., 9/26. Here in VT, totality will
occur around 10:15. I haven't checked, but I believe the eclipse will
be less prominent the farther west you go.

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:42AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Kathy - I'm in VA just outside of Washington, DC. Any idea what
time it will be?

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:44AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
The visible part of the eclipse starts at 01:12 Universal Time
(Greenwhich). To find out when it starts in your time, subtract your
time zone from Universal Time For Vancouver we must subtract 7
hours whic places the start time on the previous day and prior to moon
rise. If you have a specific question about the eclipse, carry on....

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:44AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thanks Dave

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:45AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thank you Kathy!

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:45AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Sarah: The eclipse will start at 10:12 pm on the 26th

Sarah: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:45AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Time to get kids on the road. Chat again.

mask: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:46AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc I hope they are nanofossils. I suppose the "proof of the pudd-
ing" will be when we get samples back from Mars next century.

Greg: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:46AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
To: Pacific Science Center People. My 6th period integrated science
students have two questions for you ar anyone else. 1) If a material is
dreated in the wieghtlessness of space and brought to earth will is still
be wieghtless 2) How does the color on color TV travel through space
to our TV.

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:46AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thanks Dave, I think one of the local meteorologists on the local TV
stations will have acurate information for my locality, prehaps others
can try a call to their local station

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:47AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
To summarize LFM in a sentence or two. It is a K-12 project to follow
NASA's upcoming missions to Mars. A focus on the men and women
who build the spacecraft, operate the spacecraft, plan the science, etc,
etc Next JUly 4th, 1997, the first spacecraft will arrive at Mars,
bounce to a landing and deploy a rover which will roam the martian
countryside, sending back pictures. With LFm, you can come along
with the team doing this exciting science. LFM also inlcudes live TV
and printed materials, as well as this onlne site

Dave (VT): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:47AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc - I'm interested in doing the star census. I know the activity is in
the stratosphere giude, but I don't have one. Do you know of another
resource? Project Astro might have it, but i haven't had a chance to
look yet.

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:49AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Greg... Weigtlessness is a lack of gravity. When an item is returned to
a gravity situation, it takes on weight. But.... do not forget:
weightlessness is not massless. All objects have\ mass even in a 0-g
environment.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:50AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
To 6th period integrated science students about weihtlessness. Things
made in space (microgravity) will certianly weigh something once they
come bak to Earth. He is a puzzler to think about. If you build a tower
as high as the Space Shuttle flies, and then climb it and jump off,
would you float like an astronaut?

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:51AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Greg...Colour in colour TV is imbedded in the signal. The reciever
translates the codes and re- generates the colour.

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:51AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thanks Kathy

Dave (VT): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:53AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Nice talking to everyone, gotta go, Dave (VT)

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:53AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Dave: The Star census can be found at
http://passporttoknowledge.com/hst/events/starsearch.html That version is
from HST when not too many schools participated. it worked really
well for LFS when a bunch of schools played.

Greg: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:53AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thanks for answering.

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:53AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc....The real problem is...CAN you build a tower as high as the
space shuttle flies. If the answer is yes then the other answere is
also.....yes

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:55AM PDT (-0800
GMT)
Sorry I had to duck out, parents arriving to pick up children!, I'll be
printing this out and saving it. Marc did the Conference Webchat get
archived and if so where is it I couldn't find it?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:55AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
By Dave. For more info on microgravity, check out the lessons plans
that are part of the S/MORE project (life sciences on board
Shulle-MIR). The URL is
http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/teachers/microgravity/index.html

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:57AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Gayle, Do you mean the Virtual Conference Webchat? I think the
anwer is yes. Check out the VCon home pages at
http://passporttoknowledge.com/lfmconf/

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 12:57AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
By the way, all that excellent lunar eclipse information was not from
me (although I'd like to claim I know all that!) but from one of our
astronomers, David.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:58AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Does anybody else want to guess about the tower as high as the
shuttle? What would happen if you could build a tower 300 miles high
(aprox altitudeof shuttle), climb it then jump off?

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:58AM PDT (-0800
GMT)
Six261, about being on your home turf, how long have you been
away, I'm only new here in London, I've lived here for 8years.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 12:59AM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Is kainoosh still around?

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:00PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc, I meant the Webchat. Maybe I just didn't go far enough in.

David (sky-guy)Dodge: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:00PM PDT (-0800
GMT)
Marc... I believe Arthur C. Clark wrote a book (or short story) about
a space elevator. You may wish to check that out. I'm quite sure his
data is correct

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:00PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Is this only a 1 hour chat like usual?

mask: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:00PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc, wouldn't there be an overwhelming wind load from the Jet
Stream?

Greg: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:01PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
If you built this giagantic tower what would happen at the place where
the atmosphere ends and space begins. Would the speed of the
spinning atmosphere bend the tower?

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:02PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Aging myself Gayle, but i grew up in Canada, I'm 46 and left
Woodstock in 1967, I used to run on the Western University track

Greg: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:03PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Is this chat a regular event?

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:03PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Hi Gayle, it doesn't look like the WebChat is yet on Quest. But the
insiders know it can be found at
http://k12-dev.arc.nasa.gov/marsconf/activity.html Consider yourself
an insider

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 1:04PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Greg...next Thursday, 3 hours later (3pm Pacific time)

David (sky-guy)Dodge: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:05PM PDT (-0800

Greg...There a whole fleet of problems associated with the concept of
a 'space tower' two have been alluded to: wind sheer and rotation of
the Earth. Add one more...coriolis effects. I hark back to another
answer ...CAN you build... I think there are too many obstacles to
overcome.

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:06PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
FYI, This chat is regular. It alernates between noon and 3Pm Pacific
every Thursday. Flip flopping with it (also noon and 3 PM Thursday)
is a S/MORE chat. So in a few hours, there'll be another chat focused
on S/MORE. Last week there were some folks from Cyprus. The chat
is scheduled to end now, but of course folks are free to stick around
as long as they like.

David (sky-guy)Dodge: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:07PM PDT (-0800

I'm leaving now but will be back with Cathy next week.... If anyone
has a question in the mean time, contact me at:

http://pacific-space-centre.bc.ca

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 1:07PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thanks Marc!

Marc (California): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:08PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
I will be leaving shortly to go back to NASA HQ. I am trying to
convince the big cheeses that we should do an online project (like
SMORE or LFM), but with the Shuttle Team. Not just astronauts but
all the folks behind the scenes.

mask: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:09PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
The base of a space tower would have to be very large and anchored
in solid rock far from earthquake zones.

Six261: . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:10PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc, that sounds great, this is great fun and of course enlightening,
thanks so much

Gayle (London, ON): . . . . Thu, Sep 19, 1:10PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Thanks, Marc, wow, first-official, then-senior and now an insider,
I'm honoured and humbled. I'd love to be around for the Mir chat but
I have to pick a friends child up from Daycare, maybe next week.

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 1:10PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Marc, that project you're trying to do sounds GREAT and right up my
alley! I would be interested to know more if something comes of it!

Kathy - Pacific Space Centre (Vancouver, Canada): . . . . Thu, Sep
19, 1:12PM PDT (-0800 GMT)
Gayle...if you want to chat sometime about Canadiam LFM progress,

About the space tower, you engineer types seem right that it would be
very hard to build the tower. But if you did build it, and jumped off,
you will fall like a stone. The reason that astronauts are weightless is
that the Shuttle is constantly falling (at the same rate as gravity), but
it
is always moving forward in an orbit that prevents it from crashing
into earth. In a tower (stuck in one place on earth) the falling isn't
compensated by forward motion, so after a while there would be a big
splat

What is this smore or lfm? I teach 7th grade integrated science and am
interested in getting my students involved in conversations with
scientists

Gayle, I don't think so. THere is too much potential for abuse if we
let people put URLs. But you can always write your email in your
handle now

Greg: Marc mentioned that LFM is LIVE FROM MARS "To
summarize LFM in a sentence or two.
LFM also inlcudes live TV
and printed materials, as well as this onlne site" and SMORE is
SHUTTLE MIR ON-LINE RESEARCH EXPERIMENT and the info
for that is found at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/smore/
