Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:01AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [56 ] Hello Everyone! Welcome to the second LIVE FROM MARS WebChat. Our guest today is Bob Haberle from NASA's Ames Research Center in Mt.View California. Bob is the atmosphere interdisciplinary scientist-- which means he studies the atmosphere of Mars so he can better understand the weather and climate of Mars and why it is so different from Earth. Bob is a team member on the Mars Global Surveyor mission, which will be launched the day after tomorrow.

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:01AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [57 ] A NOTE: There are 15 school signed on this morning, so that means a lot of questions for Bob. You may not see the answer immediately, but be patient. Bob will be typing his answers as fast as he can.

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:07AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [91 ] STEPHANIE/CJHS: TURN OFF THE "CAPS LOCK." YOU ARE YELLING! Thanks :-)

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:07AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [92 ] Bethany. The soil would need quite a bit of fertilizer to grow anything. And it would need to be protected from the uv radiation.

David/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:08AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [93 ] What is your side on the theroy of, life came from Mars on a meteor in single celled life form,in a sense made a spark of life on earth and then evolved into the current of life on Earth

jeri/Serrano Intermediate : . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:08AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [94 ] About how much data do you collect an hour from the shuttle

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:08AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [95 ] Stephanie. Take all the math and science you can get.

Lee: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:08AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [96 ] Good moning ( over there ) Sandy, what do you do?

Joey/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:10AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [97 ] do you believe water could still exist under the surface of mars?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:10AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [98 ] David on life. I'm not really an expert in this area, but my understanding is that anything is possible. Its just that it is so hard to determine what went on 4.5 billion years ago.

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:10AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [99 ] jeri/Serrano Intermediate: Sorry, we can't answer your question on the shuttle today. Bob Haberle is a Mars scientist. Do you have any Mars-related questions for him?

?????: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:10AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [100 ] Jamie/CJHS thinks you hate her! Please tell her your not! :-)

Matt & Lydia: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:11AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [101 ] Hi, we are doing a project in school that involves landing a ship and staying on mars for an extended period of time. Our question is does NASA have any type of portable habitats that could be used to stay on the planet?

jeri/Serrano Intermediate : . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:11AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [102 ] About how much data do you collect an hour from the shuttle

cyp: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:11AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [103 ] Does the Global Surveyor have navigational systems on board?

Lee: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:11AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [104 ] if water did still exist under the surface what else would it contain?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:11AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [105 ] Joey on water. Absolutely! I'm convinces there is water on Mars buried beneath the surface. Its just a matter of how deep it is. At the poles it could be very close to the surface. Indeed at the north pole it is at the surface.

Shumate Middle School: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:11AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [106 ] How long do you think the current dust storm on Mars will last? Do you think it will affect our mission plans? (Amanda Duncan)

Charlie/Gates Intermediate: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:12AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [107 ] I'm back!!

KrissclassCMS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:12AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [108 ] Hi Bob we are joining the Chat now. We are five sixth grade students from Columbine Middle School in Montrose Colorado.

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:13AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [109 ] Matt and Lydia. I'm not sure NASA has built any portable habitats for extended stays on Mars, but they have looked at various designs.

Lee: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:13AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [110 ] Matt and Lydia, would the astonauts not suffer from calcium defiency due to so long in zero gravity and so be too itll to live on mars.

jeri/Serrano Intermediate : . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:13AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [111 ] what is Mars mainly made of?

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:14AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [112 ] Welcome sixth grade students from Columbine Middle School in Montrose Colorado!

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:14AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [113 ] One of the biggest problems we need to solve if we are going to send humans to Mars is the prolonged weightlessness that they must endure.

Shaun/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:15AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [114 ] Bob: Did you get Jamie's question and my question? Most of us allready have answers! PLEASE!!!! :-)

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:15AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [115 ] As I'm sure you can all see, there are TONS of questions for Bob to answer. Slow down a bit please! He's beginning to get cramps in his fingers from typing soooooo fast :-)

KrissclassCMS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:15AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [116 ] Bob when did you realize that you wanted to be a scientist for NASA?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:15AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [117 ] Jeri. Mars is made of rocks containing silicon, iron, and various minerals. It also has an atmosphere of Carbon Dioxide.

Joey/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:15AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [118 ] based on what you know,could life survive on mars,if not could we change it's environment so it could?

Matt: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:16AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [119 ] No, our ship is making artificial gravivity by rotating. That means that they will not have any type of deficiancy.

jeri/Serrano Intermediate : . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:16AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [120 ] Are you still there ?

Lee: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:16AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [121 ] Hello 6th grade students!

David/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:16AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [122 ] Is there a chance that a layer of permafrost could be blocking oter minerals

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:16AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [123 ] Shaun/Jamie. I didn't get your question.

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:17AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [127 ] David. There is a good chance that permafrost exists on Mars. And it could certainly be blocking other minerals.

Lee: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:18AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [128 ] With living on Mars, how much food would you need and whee would you store it?

KrissclassCMS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:18AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [129 ] When the sojourner is on a hill and the sun goes down will it roll down the hill or does it have a parking brake?

Bethany/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:18AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [130 ] Do you know of any natural resources on Mars?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:18AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [131 ] Cyp. Yes, MGS does have onboad navigational systems to help it get to Mars. By the way it launches tommorrow. Let all keep our fingers crossed!!!!

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:20AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [143 ] Krissclass. Sojouner doesn't have a parking brake in the sense you think of. But it can stop its wheels from turning. Also, the camera on Pathfiner will tell us if it is on a hill or not.

Joey/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:20AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [144 ] based on what you know,could life still exist on mars,if not could we change it's environment so it could.

Jeff/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:21AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [150 ] What if one of Mars moons gets in the Mars Global Surveyor flight path

KrissclassCMS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [151 ] Does the Sojourner have steel wheels or rubber wheels? We wouldn't think that it would be able to climb rocks if it had steel wheels.

Mark Stokes: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [152 ] Bob - how does the density of Mars' atmosphere affect the entry of a spacecraft (speed, heat shield, etc.) as opposed to earths' atmosphere?

kristy/cjhs: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [153 ] What are your personal opinions on the life on Mars theory?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [154 ] Megan. MGS differs from the Viking Mission of 20 years ago in that it is intended to map the entire surface of Mars for one Mars year. Also, MGS does not have any landers. It is an orbiter. We want to really be able to characterize the global nature of Mars both its surface and atmosphere.

Matt: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:22AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [155 ] is it possible for humans to terra form Mars? If yes how would they start to go about it?

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:23AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [157 ] Stephanie: I believe someone asked that same question earlier and Bob said to take as many math and science courses as you can!

megan/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:24AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [158 ] What instruments will be used to study the atmosphere?

chris/cjhs: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:24AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [159 ] does it rain on mars?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:24AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [160 ] Jeff/CJHS. Mars has seasons quite like our own, but they last about twice as long. Also Mars is in a very elliptical orbit compared to Earth so its winters in the north are much warmer than its winter in the south. So if you want to live there, I'd recommend going north!

Rebekah/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:24AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [161 ] Was there any particular person who influenced you to choose your career? Who are they and what influence did they have on you?

Matt/Cjhs: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:24AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [162 ] Hey Bob. Come back

Sandy/NASA Chat Host: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:25AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [163 ] These are some of THE best questions we've ever had during our WebChats. There are about 30 questions that still need to be answered. In 15 mins. (9:45 PST) we'll stop taking questions so that Bob can answer the ones you've already sent in.

Tom\CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:26AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [164 ] Are you hoping that the Mars Global Surveyer will make any particular dicoveries about Mars?

megan/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:26AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [167 ] matt don't be so mean.

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:26AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [168 ] Megan/CJHS. There are a number of instruments on MGS that can study the atmosphere. First there is a camera that can take pictures so we can see clouds and dust storms. Then, there is a "Thermal Emission Spectrometer" which can tell us what the temperature of the atmosphere is. And there is a radio experiment that will do the same thing, but at much higher resolution.

Bethany/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:26AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [169 ] Do you know of any natural resources on Mars?

Joey/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:26AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [170 ] Do you think there is any chance for life to still exist on mars today?

Hunters Woods: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:26AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [171 ] We have seen the JPL CD- Rom, Mars Navigator. It shows an experiment where a signal is sent to the MGS & gathers data on the atmosphere. Are you part of this experiment?

mike/gates: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:27AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [172 ] I keep getting thrown out

Jaime/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:27AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [173 ] Bob Haberle: Please try to get my question this time, here it is: Are you going to be interacting with the student PET project taking place from Oct.18 through Dec.10 ?

David/CJHS: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:28AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [182 ] Is there a chance that there are undiscoverd minerals on Mars

Yoda: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:28AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [183 ] Anybody out there?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:28AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [184 ] Tom/CJHS. I'm hoping that MGS will see a global dust storm develop. These are specatular events. The winds get so strong (over 100 miles per hour near the surface) that dust gets lifted almost everywhere. Eventually the entire planet gets covered with dust up to 50 km high. I just can't imagine what it would be like to be there when it occurs. If MGS sees one we will be able to watch it in great detail.

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:37AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [242 ] Chris. I'm not sure really why Mars doesn't have rings. I'll ask my colleague about that. My guess is because of its size. Its a small planet, (about half as big as earth) so it doesn't have a very strong gravity field to keep things around. But this is just a guess. (Yes, scientists do guess!)

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:40AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [255 ] Shaun/cjhs. In principle it would be possible to change the surface and atmosphere of Mars if it has the basic ingredients to do so. You need lots of CO2 and water to make a greenhouse, and you need lots of nitrogen to make it like the earth. My feeling is that the required amounts are not there. Even if they were it would take hundreds of thousands of years to make it like Earth because of the energy needed. But its fun to think about isn't it?

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:42AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [265 ] Maddyp. Plants cannot grow on Mars without help. Lots of help. The soil has toxic gases in it, and ultrviolet radiation gets all the way to the surface and it would sterilize any plants you tried to grow. But if you sheltered them, and f ertilized them, it migth be possible.

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:48AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [294 ] Matt & Lydia. It is purely a politcal question regarding how long it will take to get humans to Mars. We would like to know about the atmosphere of Mars. Use the scroll back messages box to see the previous text. We've been chatting for an hour now and many questions have been answered about the atmosphere on Mars.

Bob/Haberle/NASA: . . . . Tue, Nov 5, 9:55AM PDT (-0700 GMT). . . [331 ] The atmosphere of Mars is mostly carbon dioxide. And its very thin. Surface pressure is only about 7 mb compared to Earth's 1013 mb. The most interesting thing about it is that it has huge dust storms. they cover the entire planet.
