Dear All,

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Jan Wee and I has been
associated with the moderating of several PTK electronic field trips (Live
>From Antarctica, Live From the Stratosphere, Live
>From the Hubble Space Telescope, Live From Antarctica 2 and Live From
Mars), part of the Sharing NASA resources found at Quest's K-12 Internet
Initiative <http://quest.arc.nasa.gov>

As a moderator of mail lists like this one I am keenly aware of the
importance of proper "list netiquette" and problems associated with
improperly posted "unsubscribe" messages. So, if you don't mind, I thought
I would post this information for the benefit of those who are NOT
following proper netiquette in unsubscribing.

Mail lists, like this one, operate via special software that understand
"commands" eliminating the need for human intervention. Mail lists like
discuss use TWO email addresses....

1) An ADMINISTRATIVE address: Used for subscribing, unsubscribing,
setting mail options (sometimes, not always), etc.

In the case of the discuss list the administrative address is:
listmanager@quest.arc.nasa.gov

THIS IS THE ADDRESS YOU USE TO SUBSCRIBE AND UNSUBSCRIBE TO THIS LIST!

and

2) A LIST address: Used for interacting with the members of the list. When
you want to post a note to the members of this list, you send the e-mail to
this address and each member receives a copy of the posting.

In the case of the discuss list the LIST address is: discuss@quest.arc.nasa.gov

>>>>>HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM DISCUSS....
If you are subscribed to the discuss list and would like to UNSUBSCRIBE...

1. Send a message to: listmanager@quest.arc.nasa.gov

2. You may leave the subject blank (as no human reads this
message)

3. In the body of the message, write:

unsubscribe discuss

4. Send your message. In a few minutes (usually) you will receive
a confirmation message telling you that you have successfully unsubscribed.

5. You are off the list!

This is the typical format for many lists but you should ALWAYS SAVE the
WELCOME message that you receive when you first subscribe. Usually (almost
always) you are given the directions on how to remove yourself from mail
lists in this welcome message. Some lists use a command like SIGNOFF <name
of list> instead of UNSUBSCRIBE. So be alert!

As you can see, it is quite annoying to have folks sending unsubscribe
messages to the LIST when they should be sent to the ADMINISTRATIVE address.

So PLEASE file this message away and use it when and if you need to
unsubscribe from this list. Remember... not all lists use this format for
unsubscribing! So keep those welcome messages which you may find quite
useful some day.

Hope this helps and also I hope I haven't overstepped my bounds by sharing
the above info! :-)

Jan Wee
