Just as importantly, the YOUTHFUL, DEDICATED, ENTHUSIASTIC,=20 human flight crew worked perfectly as well.=20 When an airbag proved to be improperly retracted, months of=20 rehearsal led to an almost immediate solution and soon, down rolled Sojourner, to set "6 wheels=20 on soil." This was the first mission to deliver a roving vehicle outfitted=20 with science instruments to the surface of another planet and a rover with some rudimentary onboard smarts sufficient=20 to operate semi-independently from Earth. =20 But what about the science results? Over 15 chemical analyses were made with Sojourner's Alpha=20 Proton X-ray Spectrometer, or rock sniffer. They found that rocks like Barnacle Bill were unlike the=20 Martian meteorites which had fallen to Earth, and seemed to=20 give evidence that Mars had ENJOYED a more geologically active=20 past than many expected. Pathfinder found that the morning sky was obscured with clouds,=20 not ground fogs. The rocks around the Ares Vallis landing site were shaped and=20 distributed in ways consistent with the reason for choosing=20 it in the first place that it was the mouth of an ancient=20 flood channel. And in an October press conference, Hank Moore, a scientist=20 on the rover team and a veteran of the Viking missions,=20 provided some amazing speculations on just what Sojourner=20 had shown us.
