Dear David and Fellow LFM-Participants, I'm enclosing the body of a message sent by Pat Haddon on Nov. 4th that highlights some of the answers to your questions. >From Pat: Dear educators, Student interactivity is an important component of each PTK electronic field trip. This may be achieved in a variety of ways: --CUT------ * by emailing questions to scientists via <<question-lfm@quest.arc.nasa.gov>> before and after the broadcasts; [EASY] and, * by emailing questions DURING the broadcast via <<onair-lfm@quest.arc.nasa.gov>>. [EASY!] For the LIVE FROM MARS broadcast on Thursday, November 13th, we MAY have time to feature some student questions that are submitted BEFORE the broadcast. [This may especially appeal to those of you who plan to tape the broadcast and view at a later date.] We are looking for student questions that relate directly to the themes covered by the broadcast: * Mars Global Surveyor YOU MAY WANT TO REVIEW THE LATEST PLAN FOR AN EXTENDED AEROBRAKING PERIOD, GOING MUCH MORE SLOWLY THAN ORIGINALLY INTENDED, IN ORDER TO ENSURE THE SOLAR PANEL IS NOT UNDULY STRESSED: THE JPL PRESS RELEASE OF OCTOBER 30TH (SEE THE JPL WEB PAGES AND HTTP://WWW.JPL.NASA.GOV/MARSNEWS FOR THIS) PROVIDES A GOOD OVERVIEW. * Martian weather HOW EARTH AND MARS COMPARE? WHAT'S THE SAME AND DIFFERENT? SOMETHING RELATING TO THE ONLINE COLLABORATIVE "WEATHER WORLDS" ACTIVITIES... * Mars' magnetic field SEE LAST WEEK'S "SCIENCE NEWS" FOR AN UPDATE ON >MULTIPLE< MAGNETIC ANOMALIES, AND ONLY A SMALL, WEEK MAGENTIC FIELD... * Mars Orbital Laser Altimeter (MOLA) THE ONLY DATA FROM MOLA WAS ACQUIRED DURING THE 3RD ORBIT: SEE THE MGS WEB SITE FOR AN EXCELLENT OVERVIEW OF RESULTS... QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES IN THE LFM TEACHER'S GUIDE WOULD BE ESPECIALLY APPROPRIATE. * Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) PLEASE NOTE WE'LL BE COMING LIVE FROM TES CONTROL, AT ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, AS WELL AS FEATURING THE RESULTS OF THE "ROCK STARS" STUDENT SUBMISSION OF ROCKS FROM AROUND THE U.S.! Please email individual questions to <<phaddon@aol.com>> NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH. Include the student's name, grade, school, town and state. TO ENSURE YOU GET A RESPONSE FROM NASA'S MARS TEAM EVEN IF NOT SELECTED FOR USE ON AIR, You should also cc the question to <<question-lfm@quest.arc.nasa.gov>>. Looking forward to hearing from you. Pat Haddon Passport to Knowledge End of Pat's message. I hope this answers your questions. Let us know if you need more information.
