Dear LFM Educators :

I enjoy reading the LFM discussion list and I am sorry that down here we do
not have access to many of them, like the airing of TV programs.

I would like to share with you our Mars Academy school project.

Thanks!!

Mars Academy is back
====================
With the beginning of the school year, the Mars Academy is back!
We have new and exciting activities to work together in the design of a
manned mission to Mars!

The Mars Academy (http://www.marsacademy.com) is an online collaborative
project by which students from all over the world are designing a manned
mission to the Red planet. Later this semester, when the mission design is
finalized, a web based simulation of the mission will allow participants to
take over the controls and fly the mission. Each represented school will
impersonate one of the astronauts to make the journey or a mission
controller on Earth.

Table of Contents
-----------------
1. Choose the propulsion system and the mission architecture
2. 9/22 : Web chat to decide on the propulsion system and the mission
architecture.
3. How much do you know about Mars ?
4. Crew Selection Process : help us select the crew
5. Writing and Art contest
6. Our new team
7. Coming up : an astronaut at Lincoln

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------

1. Choose the propulsion system and the mission architecture
------------------------------------------------------------
We have added new sections on propulsion and mission architectures to guide
us in determining the optimum configuration for the mission. They can be
found at :
http://www.marsacademy.com/propul.htm
Our Interactive Mission Design page (http://www.marsacademy.com/i5.htm)
allows our users to select different propulsion systems and mission
architectures and calculate estimated masses for each of those configurations.

2. 9/22 : Web chat to decide on the propulsion system and the mission
architecture.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------
We invite all our members to join us for a web chat on Monday, September
22nd at 2 pm EDT. There we will discuss the possible mission architectures
and propulsive systems and decide on a possible configuration for the
mission. If you are interested in participating, please send an email to
grshaid@marsacademy.com

3. How much do you know about Mars ?
------------------------------------
Do you think you are ready to become a Martian astronaut? If so, we
challenge you to take our online Mars Astronaut Quiz
(http://www.marsacademy.com/marsquiz.htm). Get past the three increasingly
difficult levels and you are almost ready for launch!

4. Crew Selection Process : help us select the crew
----------------------------------------------------
Our mission positions are defined and the 4 person crew will consist of a
pilot, a medical doctor/biologist, a mechanic/engineer and a
scientist/geologist. In order to prepare for the imminent crew selection
process, we are receiving questions that will help us frm a suitable
selection criteria. These questions can be entered online at
http://www.marsacademy.com/addques.htm

5. Writing and Art contest
--------------------------
We are inaugurating a new section in our Mars Academy : Mars in the Arts.
(http://www.marsacademy.com/m_arts.htm) Through this section we will try to
gain insight on the human aspect of Mars exploration and try to realize the
vision of what life will be like in the Red Planet. The Mars Academy is
sponsoring two online contests (http://www.marsacademy.com/m_arts5.htm)
about manned exploration of Mars, open to all grade levels : a writing
contest, where students are invited to submit their fictional or non
fictional stories about manned missions and colonization of Mars, and an art
contest, in which participants can submit their visions of how Man will
explore and eventually colonize the Red Planet.
Please visit this all new section at http://www.marsacademy.com/m_arts.htm

6. Our new team
---------------
Our veteran Mars Club members have graduated and a brand new team has taken
over. The new Mars Club is made up now of Luca Bertuccelli, Angela Lee,
Alejandra Felicio, Sebastian Von Berg, Brent Hughes and Manish Motwani.

7. Coming up : an astronaut at Lincoln
--------------------------------------
Fernando Caldeiro, an astronaut candidate will visit Lincoln on September 24
and give a conference. Stay tuned for more news on the transmission of this
conference via the Internet!
