Hmmm.....

Sol means sun (e.g. solarium, solar, solstace). Thus, a sol is a day -- the
time it takes a planet to rotate on its axis. On Mars it is 24.7 Earth hours
or almost the same as our day.

The time zone question is an interesting one. It seems that this week, Mars
is on roughly on the same day/night schedule as Japan. This will of course
change because the sol on Mars is longer than ours. Perhaps a student project
would be to calculate how long it would take Mars to go through all of our
time zones!
