The recent Pathfinder mission to Mars sparked new interest in sending astronauts to destinations beyond the Earth's orbit, but a National Research Council study dampens expectation of that happening soon. For example, sending a crew to Mars would take almost two years round-trip and it would be difficult and costly -- if not impossible -- to stock supplies.
