Subject: Marvelous Mars Input Requested for 7/6 & 7/9 Programs
Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 10:21:19 -0500
Dear discuss-lfm members, Those of you who accessed the 11/19/96 and/or 4/24/97 Live From Mars telecasts know that PTK includes brief *Marvelous Mars* segments highlighting interesting, curious, and intriguing "factoids" about the Red Planet. The July 6th and 9th two hour live telecast plans are underway and PTK staff would like to tap your input and perhaps give you/ your students an opportunity to suggest Marvelous Mars factoids for these programs (and be credited on the telecast). If you have a suggestion that is quick, snappy, and appealing to kids (ages 8-14 target audience) please send your Marvelous Mars factoid to: ghaines@mail.arc.nasa.gov for consideration. Include your full name, school, location, grade level/subject. Remember to keep in mind the Marvelous Mars factoids used in the past programs and those which are especially appealing to kids! Sample Marvelous Mars Factoid from 4/24/97 program: Past MM factoids pose a question... "The Pathfinder arrives on Mars July 4, 1997, but there is a month that might be >even more< appropriate, Do you know which month and why?" and Others point out interesting contrasts and similarities... "The highest temperature ever recorded on Mars = 17 degrees Celsius or about 63 degrees F. The lowest temperature = minus 143 degrees Celsius or minus 225 degrees F. A Martian Year = 687 Earth Days but a Martian Day is very similar to Earth's at 24 hours and 37 minutes." Jan Wee, moderator
