Hi: All list members living in the Great Lakes area are invited to join the Sheboygan Astronomical Society for the second annual Rocket Day in the "Rockets for Schools" program. The event will take place on May 16th and 17th in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. This year, 180 students from grades 6-12 have been chosen. These represent 20 students from each of Wisconsin's nine congressional districts. In addition, 192 students (12 from each of the 16 congressional districts in Michigan) will take part. Each student will get hands-on participation in one of six teams. These include: LAUNCH TEAM - preparing the two Super Loki rockets and the launch site. RANGE SAFETY TEAM - works with Wisconsin Air National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, and local police and fire safety officials. RADIO COMMUNICATIONS TEAM - works with Wisconsin Air National Guard, Civil Air Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard. PAYLOAD TEAM - works with science payloads, remote sensing specialists, engineers from MTU and the meteorologists from UW-Madison. RECOVERY TEAM - works with U.S. Coast Guard and local boaters. MISSION CONTROL - works with all teams, and coordinates disbursement of information. The launch event includes: Friday (May 16th) educational program with speakers, launch team presentations and interaction with the Grand Rapids, Michigan Virtual Launch Site. Saturday (May 17th) launch of two Orbital Sciences Super Loki rockets, one special launch, weather and camera balloon launches, amateur rocket launches by the Tripoli Rocketry Association, and congressional district student launches. Aerospace related displays will be in the Sheboygan Armory on both days. At 8:30 pm "Date with the Stars" at Maywood Environmental Park - sponsored by the Sheboygan Astronomical Society.
