Dear discuss-lfm members, Over the past two weeks many classes and home schooling families have registered their participation in the Planet Explorer Toolkit online collaborative activity. (If you are a new member be sure to visit the Live From Mars Web site at http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/mars Select Featured Events icon. Select Planet Explorer Toolkit. You will find a very complete step-by-step description and a time line for this exciting project that engages students in activities that emulate the work of the Mars Mission Team and has students devising their BEST proposal for their Planet Explorer Toolkit.) ***Over 1,662 students*** from Grades K-12 are officially registered (that means their sponsoring teacher/parent sent me a note telling me their school name, age/grade, location and number of students) and are busy working on their proposals. Many classes have been actively involved in research learning about the scientific instruments, creating a database of possible instruments to include -- like Charles Lindgren's 8th graders, devising their own small group proposals, holding in-class debates, and are moving to the process of determining their class' BEST P.E.T. proposal. Lots of critical thinking and problems solving is going on in these classes! You are not too late to join the P.E.T. online collaborative activity. Classes will not begin posting their P.E.T. proposal online (in the debate-lfm forum) until December 10th (through December 20th). The group student debate, hosted by Planetary Scientist Sanjay Limaye, Space Science and Engineering Center, UW-Madison and PTK Staff, will begin January 6th and consensus on a UNIVERSAL BEST P.E.T. will be reached by January 31st. Please send your registration information ASAP if you have not yet registered your class and would like to participate. (All classes registering have received a confirmation note from me. If you did not receive one and feel you registered, please resend your information.) All participating educators should subscribe to the debate-lfm forum by December 9th. To subscribe: send a message to listmanager@quest.arc.nasa.gov Leave the subject blank. In the message body, write: subscribe debate-lfm Send your message. You will receive a confirmation note back indicating that you have been added to this list and a short note detailing key information. To post a message to the debate-lfm forum, send the message to debate-lfm@quest.arc.nasa.gov Don't expect activity within this forum until December 10th with the exception of a reminder note or two. If you have questions or concerns about the P.E.T. Activity, please use this forum (discuss-lfm) to post these as other educators likely have similar questions/concerns and this is the appropriate forum for educator discussion.
