I teach a course called Space Technology to 10-12 graders. We have a 90 minute block everyday and team with a computer/industrial tech component. We have just finished building twelve 4 inch reflector telescopes and are now moving into a study of the solar system, with emphasis on exploring Mars robotically. We will be designing some remotely controlled rovers equipped with cuseeme cams and pneumatically controlled arms and will be setting up some simulated "mars scapes" which we will have open for explorations the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I will post more information later, but we are going to open up the exploration to anyone with cuseeme capability. What the camera will see will be the simulated mars scape, and using either microphone or the chat window, students will be able to remotely send directions to my students, who will then drive the rover or move the arm to explore the "terrain." We will have several items there which could be "discovered" as well as using fans for wind, lights for simulated sunsets, shadow measuring, etc. We hope to have an open registration with time slots next week. More information will follow. We are also thinking about using cuseeme and/or Netmeeting to have a summary conference a week later where participants could share their findings with each other and we could post accurate photos and information on the sites we make up. So ... as you can see ... there are some more High Schools out here! We have just been too busy to get anything written!!! Hope you will consider roving with us!
