Dear LFM participants,

At the recent open house I voiced my frustration with not being able to
receive NASA-TV and the Passport to Knowledge broadcasts easily. One
mother did a little digging and came up with this solution. I am
following up on it. I only hope it will be successful.

Mrs. Bashlor,

I spoke with a Lincoln Park Cable Commissioner regarding receiving the
NASA Channel at Shumate Middle School (you and I discussed this at Open
House).

He explained to me that a LARGE dish can be pointed toward the NASA
satellite to bring in the NASA channel. I explained that the school did
not have a large dish as far as I knew. He told me that he believed
that Gibraltar did not have a Cable Commissioner, therefore, a partial
revenue from TCI Cablevision's cable customer charges may be available
to use. There is a 6% revenue - 1% goes to a General Fund and 5% goes
to the City of Gibraltar.

He suggested that you call the City of Gibraltar and inquire how much
money is in the General Fund and if these funds could be made available
for you to purchase a large satellite dish for Shumate Middle School
(also available, then, to Carlson High School on the same site). He
suggests that you argue that the school has a NEED for such a dish.

This dish could also be utilized in many other ways. For example, the
dish would allow other programs to be broadcast which would be helpful
to classes other than Science such as:
German Channels for German Language CLass
		Business Video Conferences
International World News i.e. Russian, German, etc.
		E-Net - Safety Training
		Tel-Star - Michigan Education Programs

The City of Lincoln Park purchased their dish (for approx. $3,000) from
a dealer the Commissioner believes to be in the sity of Flat Rock,
however, he suggests that you go to any dealer and ask for 2 or 3 guides
which will list the programs available and codes to be used with that
particular dish.

I hope this information helps you in some way.
