Mars Educators, At our August 24 teacher workshop in Arizona, we showed everyone a really cool short (about 4 minutes) video that explains the concept of VERTICAL EXAGGERATION using Olympus Mons on Mars. The premise of the video is that so often we see NASA videos of volcanoes on Mars and Venus, and they don't say that the topography has been exaggerated using the computer. This video compares the Olympus Mons we are used to seeing (the exaggerated one that looks like a "mountain") versus what it really looks like, with no exaggeration (practically flat). The video has a sense of humor, including a funny Carl Sagan impression, the doll Barbie starring as the "Face on Mars" etc., in addition to the SCIENCE/MATH aspect. The video is called "CalderaLand." It is available by one of the people who put it together, Carter Emmart. Carter is an excellent and well-known space artist who focuses most of his work on portraying human exploration of Mars (he has worked with folks like Buzz Aldrin and Chris McKay on this kind of stuff). Carter told me today on the phone he is not sure what they need to charge for the video (maybe "at cost"-- I don't know).
