The Senate Appropriations Committee will most likely mark-up the House Appropriations Bill, next Tuesday or Wednesday, September 10 or 11. The Eisenhower Professional Development program, the federal program designed to expand professional development opportunities for science, math, and other teachers, was ELIMINATED from the House of Representatives 1997 education appropriations bill (HR 3755) in late July. We are asking the K-12 education community for assistance in opposing the elimination of Eisenhower funding for 1997. Please call or fax your Senators' offices immediately to ask them to reject the House plan to eliminate Eisenhower funding and move the money into a block grant. Please encourage as many of your colleagues as you can to join you in this action. Most important, ask your Senators to share your request to reinstate funding for the Eisenhower program with Senator Mark Hatfield and Senator Arlen Specter, the chairs of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Education Appropriations Subcommittee respectively. To find out the phone or fax numbers of your Senators, call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. If you are unable to make a long distance call, call the nearest district office of each of your Senators and speak to a legislative coordinator there. While it is unlikely you will be able to speak with your Senators directly, ask to talk with the legislative director or the staff person responsible for education issues. As you know, the Eisenhower program benefits hundreds of thousands of science, math, and other subject teachers each year. Remember that in voting, senators do count the numbers of opinions that come in from their constituents on any given issue. If you have any questions or need additional information, visit the NSTA web site at http://www.nsta.org or contact Ann Wild at (703) 312-9247; e-mail ann.wild@nsta.org. ====================================================================== BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY PROUDLY HOSTS NOVAE>> GROUP>>! _ __ | / \ / / \ | / NOVAE>> GROUP>> / \ / / --- * --- Teachers Networking for the Future / /\ \/ / / | \ / / \ / | And the FUTURE belongs to those who prepare... /_/ \_/_________ / _______/ Editor / / _____ Arthur Galus arthur-galus@worldnet.att.net / / /__ / List Manager / /____/ / Bob Melchert bmelcher@bsued.idbsu.edu /________/ Site Administrator Alan Ebel dosebel@idbsu.idbsu.edu Major Contributors Bill Jacobson wmjake@pen.k12.va.us Ted Singletary tsingletary@claven.idbsu.edu Special thanks to Gleason Sackman <sackman@plains.nodak.edu> ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe, send email to listserv@idbsu.idbsu.edu and the following message: subscribe novae firstname lastname To unsubscribe, send email to listserv@idbsu.idbsu.edu and the following message: unsubscribe novae NOVAE>> GROUP>> subscription and archive information also available at http://coehp.idbsu.edu/fachtmls/agalus/galus3a.htm ====================================================================== NOVAE>> GROUP>> archives are now available at http://prism.prs.k12.nj.us/WWW/OII/disc-pub/novae-group/index.html Monthly archives are kept at ftp://coeftp.idbsu.edu/pub/novae_group/ DISCLAIMER: Maintaining this list is a voluntary effort, requiring considerable time.
