Subject: ROSE'S QUERY ON CONTENT OF LFM 101
Date: Thu, 29 Aug 1996 07:58:11 -0700 (PDT)
Hi, Rose: The November 19 date for COUNTDOWN (LFM 101) was selected for two reasons: (1) teachers have told us that too close to the year-end vacations things get hectic in school, and (2) no-one (NASA, we,the President) cannot predict exactly when Pathfinder will launch: its window opens Dec 5 (I think) at around 02:00 (yes, 2 am) for a couple of minutes. It could launch at any time between then and late December. It's hard to make a tv program around such necessary uncertainty. Thus we plan to use the Global Surveyor launch (which is on an identical rocket from the same launch facility) to show the final stages of pre-launch activity, and be in a facility of Cape Canaveral where we (students, teachers, etc.) will be some of the last humans to see MPF and Sojourner on Earth. Seems pretty exciting to me, and reflects the real world timetable. Rose, let us know if this still seems unconvincing! Thanks to all for your ongoing input and interest. Onwards and Upwards, Geoff Haines-Stiles
