ANSWER from David Mittman on July 25, 1997: Many of the components on both the rover and lander may break if they go below certain temperatures. During the martian winter, we would expect the the rover and/or lander to stop functioning because of the cold temperatures in the environment and because they won't have the solar power to keep themselves warm.
