QUESTION: Is it possible to record noise on Mars using MPF instruments, even though the Pathfinder isn't equipped with a microphone? For example, could you use the thermocouples on the ASI/MET mast, the accelerometers, or the Tavis magnetic reluctance diaphragm sensor to listen to the surface of Mars? ANSWER from Bruce Jakosky on October 7, 1997: Unfortunately, these techniques are not really feasible. The sensitivity to sounds on Mars, as opposed to electronic noise, antenna pointing uncertainty, etc., is sufficiently small that no information would get through. I understand that the 1998 lander will carry a small microphone specifically for the purpose of listening to the sounds of Mars.
