QUESTION: To what degree are the cameras on the Pathfinder/Sojourner capable of detecting motion? It is my understanding that the imaging system used by the cameras is slow, rather like a time exposure on a film-type camera. If something were moving across the field of vision, would it register as an image, or would it be rendered virtually invisible by its limited exposure? ANSWER from David Mittman on October 28, 1997: The camera allows exposure times from 0.0005 seconds to about 30 seconds. The longer exposures are used with the "solar" filters; shorter exposures are used for regular images. Using time-lapse techniques, we have been able to catch the rover in motion in "rover movies".
