QUESTION: Did telemetry gathered during landing tell you how many bounces actually occurred? ANSWER from Robert Manning on July 22, 1997: Yes, initially (Sol 1) we received a few seconds of the lander's accelerometer data taken just before and a few seconds after the point after bridle cutting. The next day (Sol 2) we received files from the lander that gave us about 60 seconds of high sample rate accelerometer data which showed us that the lander bounced at LEAST 15 times. Later still we received low sample rate accelerometer data that told us that the lander continued to bounce and roll for another 60 seconds. So the Sagan Station and Sojourner Rover spent about 2 minutes bopping around the surface of Mars before finally coming to rest! (Wish I could be there to see it!)
