QUESTION: How long is the estimated entry time, and the times of each phase of the entry (parachute, rocket deployment, etc.). How long after landing will the first lander picture be taken and transmitted to Earth, the rover be deployed, and the first rover pictures returned to Earth? ANSWER from Cheick Diarra on September 19, l996: From the time we enter the Martian atmosphere (estimated to happen at 150 km) to the time we land will be about 6 minutes (the whole Entry-Descent-Landing takes 6 minutes). When the chute is deployed, it will take it about 10-20 seconds to stabilize, then the heat shield is released...according to plans. The landing site image will be available at around 5 PM (pacific time) on July 4 1997; the rover will be deployed after the landing site image is understood. The landing site image will include image(s) of the rover on the petal which is used to finalize the deployment strategy.
