QUESTION: I've viewed the latest monster pan and I'm amazed that I cannot see any evidence of marks left by the Pathfinder when it impacted with the Mar's surface. At an earlier conference, one of the scientist noted that the Pathfinder bounced 16 times over a 1-1/2 min. period. The Martian surface has a very fine coating of dust which I would have thought had been easily disturbed. I've noticed the rover leaves very clear distinquishable tracks. Any comments? ANSWER from Ted Roush on July 16, 1997: Last I knew the engineers were still evaluating the telemetry data that was obtained during the landing sequence. Ultimately, they might be able to tell exactly which direction is the best to look for any marks left by Pathfinders bouncing and rolling path.
