QUESTION: I read that 100 million people have logged in to the Mars web page. My question is: what kind of server do you have? How do you manage so many requests? ANSWER from Marc Siegel on July 21, 1997: Though I am not the Mars Pathfinder webmaster (that honor goes to David Dubov), I do know how they managed to handle 100's of millions of hits. Long before July 4th, David and his web team at JPL arranged for a bunch of mirror sites to handle the web traffic. Currently there are over 20 sites around the world which are dishing up the identical material that is served from the JPL site. This way, not any one place has to handle all of the traffic. For a list of all of the sites, visit http://mars.sgi.com From my perspective, this has worked very well. Every time I have gone to get Pathfinder data, I have been successful. Thanks for your interest, Marc
