QUESTION: Have any probable (hydrologically originated) sedimentary rocks been identified at the Sagan Station site? ANSWER from Mary Urquhart on September 30, 1997: No (hydrologically originated) sedimentary rocks been identified at the Pathfinder landing site. The APXS experiment on Sojourner only gives elemental abundances for the rocks examined. From elemental abundances alone we cannot tell whether a rock is igneous in origin or is a sedimentary rock such as a conglomerate formed out of small pieces of igneous rocks. One rock, Scooby Doo, may be a sedimentary rock formed from compacted soil. The reasoning behind thinking Scooby Doo is sedimentary is that it shows the same elemental compostion as the soil (not the wind blown drift material) but is observed to be much harder (resistant to being broken up by Sojourner's wheels).
