QUESTION: Does Mars have magnetic poles (north and south) like Earth? ANSWER from Bob anderson on December 19, 1996: This is an excellent question, but unfortuately we do not know the answer. When the U.S. Mariner and Viking missions studied Mars, they showed no (very little) evidence for the existence of a magnetic field. So most scientist concluded that Mars had no magnetic poles. But, when the Russian mission Phobos orbited Mars for a short period of time, it identified a weak magnetic field. Unfortuately, the Phobos mission was not completed due to a malfunction of the spacecraft. Therefore the question is still unanswered. Maybe someday you will be able to answer this question.
