QUESTION: Could rovers be used to explore other planets or moons? ANSWER from Donna Shirley on November 10, 1997: We would probably want different kinds of instrument carriers for the outer planet moons and Pluto. For instance, we're looking at a device to bore through the ice on Europa and be a submarine in the subsurface ocean (if it exists). Each planet needs it's own, tailored explorer. Rovers could be used on the moon and on Venus (if we can keep them from melting), and maybe on Mercury. Donna Shirley
