QUESTION: What is the possibility of getting spacecraft to Mars faster? ANSWER from Pieter Kallemeyn on July 28, 1997: The possibility exists, and will be proven with the Deep Space 1 unmanned spacecraft, which launches next year. DS-1 will demonstrate something caled solar electric propulsion, which promises to accelerate spacecraft more than conventional rockets can. However, this type of propulsion is best suited for "flyby" missions where you aren't required to slow down to orbit or land. Since the Mars program requires orbiters and landers, we plan to use the conventional rockets and thrusters, therefore requiring longer trip times. Pieter Kallemeyn
